Press Release: MoveOn.org Political Action Endorses Nydia Velázquez for Congress
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, June 19, 2012
In a year when Americans are looking to elect leaders committed to rebuilding the middle class, MoveOn’s members in New York’s 7thCongressional District voted to endorse Rep. Nydia Velázquez for her proven track record fighting for working families in Congress. MoveOn members cited her consistent efforts to expand affordable housing, help small businesses, and create jobs in the district.
MoveOn has more than 25,000 members in the new 7th Congressional District, and of those who participated in the endorsement vote, an overwhelming 80% favored Velázquez.
Abraham M., a MoveOn member on the Lower East Side, says "Nydia has an excellent record promoting every progressive issue that comes before Congress. She is guided by her own deep convictions and has been a leader especially in regard to affordable housing, health, and small business opportunities in the minority and the wider community."
Julie S., a MoveOn member in Brooklyn Heights, says, "Nydia has always been there for her district with all her smarts and energy. She has voted and spoken out tirelessly on behalf of the working and middle classes to improve the life in Brooklyn."
"I'm proud to receive the grassroots endorsement of MoveOn's 25,000 members in the new 7th District,” said Velázquez upon hearing of her endorsement. “For years, MoveOn members have leant critical support on the issues I've spent my career working on: providing good jobs and quality healthcare for working families, ensuring millionaires pay their fair share in taxes, and reining in corporations' influence in our democracy. I look forward to working with MoveOn's members in my district, and its 7 million members nationwide, in our continuing fight for a more progressive America."
As part of their support for the Velázquez campaign, MoveOn’s tens of thousands of members in the district will help provide the grassroots support that Velázquez will need to win, so that she can continue providing the residents of New York’s 7th district with the strong, independent, progressive representation that has characterized her tenure in Congress.
